The Last Tuesday in January
Observed annually on the last Tuesday of January in the Shetland Islands, Up Helly Aa is a spectacular series of fire festivals dedicated to celebrating the region's rich Norse and Viking heritage.
Originating in Lerwick in the late 19th century, this vibrant mid-winter tradition culminates in a breathtaking torchlit procession led by the Guizer Jarl and his squad of elaborately costumed Vikings. The dramatic pinnacle of the evening involves thousands of "guizers" (participants) casting their flaming torches into a meticulously crafted replica Viking longship, creating a blazing inferno that symbolises the end of the Yule season and the triumph of light over winter's darkness.
Preserving the islands' profound historical ties to Scandinavia, this unique cultural spectacle fosters an immense sense of local pride and unites the community in a joyous celebration of their shared identity.
