The full moon of the 8th lunar month of the Buddhist Calendar
Observed annually on the full moon of the eighth lunar month, Asalha Puja, often referred to as Dharma Day, is a significant Theravada Buddhist festival commemorating the Buddha’s very first teaching.
Taking place at the Deer Park in Sarnath shortly after his enlightenment, this historical first sermon set the "Wheel of Dharma" in motion by introducing the core tenets of the Four Noble Truths to five ascetics. The day also marks the founding of the first Buddhist monastic community (the Sangha), as one of these ascetics attained enlightenment and was ordained as the first monk. Today, devotees honour the occasion through merit-making, visiting temples, listening to teachings, and joining serene candlelit processions, serving as a vital spiritual preparation before the traditional three-month Vassa (Buddhist Lent) retreat begins.
Reflecting on this observance provides a meaningful opportunity to connect with ancient wisdom, cultivate inner peace, and bring a renewed focus to mindfulness and compassion in daily life.
