A world-renowned South African infectious diseases epidemiologist, Professor Quarraisha Abdool Karim, has shaped the global HIV prevention landscape for over three decades.
She served as the Principal Investigator of the landmark CAPRISA 004 tenofovir gel trial, which provided the first proof of concept for female-controlled microbicides, a discovery recognised by the journal Science as one of the Top 10 scientific breakthroughs of 2010. Her research establishing that antiretrovirals prevent sexually transmitted HIV laid the foundational framework for modern pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP).
Beyond her laboratory breakthroughs, Professor Abdool Karim is the Associate Scientific Director of CAPRISA, a professor of Clinical Epidemiology at Columbia University, and a UNAIDS Special Ambassador for Adolescents and HIV. She has committed her career to building scientific capacity in Southern Africa, overseeing programs that have trained more than 600 scientists in HIV and tuberculosis research.
