The 22nd day of the 9th lunar month of the Buddhist Calendar
Observed annually on the 22nd day of the ninth month of the Buddhist lunar calendar, Lhabab Düchen is a major Tibetan Buddhist festival celebrating Shakyamuni Buddha's descent from the heavenly realms back to Earth.
According to Buddhist tradition, this sacred day commemorates the Buddha’s return from the Trāyastriṃśa heaven (Heaven of the Thirty-Three), where he spent three months teaching the Dharma to liberate his deceased mother from the cycle of rebirth. Widely recognised as one of the four great merit-multiplying days in the Tibetan tradition, it is believed that the karmic results of both positive and negative actions are multiplied ten million times. Devotees mark the occasion by engaging in intense spiritual practice, visiting temples, lighting traditional butter lamps, and performing acts of generosity.
Reflecting on the spiritual significance of this festival offers a beautiful opportunity to cultivate gratitude, practice mindfulness, and foster a deeper commitment to compassionate action within communities.
