Telecommunication

History of Communication

Communication is the sharing of information between individuals. Communication exists in all organisms from Humans to the simplest single-celled bacteria. How this is done depends on complexity of the organism.

Bacteria and fungi use chemicals to communicate warnings or attract prey, plants display bright colours to communicate the presence of nectar to insects and animals use a range of hoots, bellows and calls with a wide range of meanings.

Human Communication & Language

Humans evolved alongside the other great apes, splitting from our closest relatives (the chimpanzees) approximately 6-8 million years ago.

Thoughout their evolution, like all animals, Humans have used a range of communication methods to interact with thier world. Paleoanthropologists think that Humans first began to develop true language about 200,000 years ago. Language differs from communication by moving away from simple gestures or sounds to a structured set of 'symbols' or 'words' where the meaning is understood by all in a group.

The earliest known communication through drawings representing actual objects can be found in Chauvet Cave in France. These cave paintings are approximately 32,000 years old, and show a range of predatory animals found in the area at this time period.  These include Woolly Rhinoceros, Cave Lions, Leopards, Bears and Cave Hyenas.

The earliest known written language, known as Sumerian, was used in Mesopotamia (modern day Syria, parts of Turkey and Iraq) approximately 5,000 years ago. Most tablets contain records of business transactions and give interesting insight into life 5000 years ago, with the world's oldest complaint found written in Sumerian dated to approximately 3700 years old. The complaint was written by a customer to a mechant complaining that they had been sold the wrong type of Copper and asking for a full refund...

Telecommunication

The earliest forms of Telecommunication involved signal fires to send messages over large distances, much faster than a runner or rider could...
